( admittedly, she is actually in. a pair of jammies. becuase it is almost midnight and she wants to be cozy. she's at least wearing a cardigan over them, though. looking over the menu, everything sounds... a little silly, actually. what are these item names? )

... There's a stack of rainbow pancakes...

Will you be okay, or will you need... something else? I got injured the least, I think, so I don't mind...

[ McGillis isn't certain why he's even here. He could have just as easily said no to the little outing and went to bed. He certainly deserves the rest, too. Under his button-up shirt, his chest is wrapped in bandages. Laying down would probably best for not agitating that wound further, but...

Well, he came along anyway. The whole friendship talk was horrible to listen to when he has such hang-ups about his own one and only friend, but at the same time the horribleness means everyone has dug their claws into his soul a little bit now. Enough that he's going to get food with them anyway.

He's getting a Belgian Waffle, thanks. He needs some sugar right now. He's not going to say much unless spoken to (or unless he overhears something especially stupid). McGillis is looking more frazzled by the whole ordeal than one might have expected. But he's present and it counts for something.]

[ Mafuyu was certainly a surprise in all of this mess. McGillis still has not forgotten that switchflip to a positive sociable persona.

So while McGillis isn't particularly inclined to be a great conversationalist tonight, he's still curious enough to indulge her in menu talk. Show those pancakes. ]

That seems like they would taste mostly of food dye.

There's not even much variety... They're all the same pancake, but colorful. It would be boring.

( she almost huffs childishly. it would be ridiculous and incredibly unlike her if she wasn't exhausted. )

[ Everyone here needs to feel immense gratitude towards Arven, the sole reason Eli actually took a shower and somehow had clean clothes to wear after the fact. He will likely be bringing him (and Mabosstiff) back some food; there is a high chance it will all be bacon.

Hence, Eli is here. He wasn't going to say no to grabbing some grub and may have even been bizarrely excited at the prospect of a sitdown restaurant, even if it is only a cheap all-day breakfast joint. This would be because he's never been to any restaurant. Ever. It's not unlike his first reaction to whatever grocery store chain the island has: awe.

If he had been tired from the palace before, he had found his second wind, and that second wind? It's called food. ]

...why is there so much stuff on the menu? Where do they get it all from? Can they really make everything in the kitchen here?

[ Scanning items, what does he... even...? ]

Oh man. What do I even get? What's a milkshake? What's french toast? Is it just toast? What's French about it? Ain't that a country somewhere?

A milkshake is a drink made with ice cream- it's thick but creamy and sweet. French Toast is bread that is coated in mixed eggs and cream, and then pan-fried. There's a lot of ways you can customize it too- fruit, chocolate, powdered sugar... It was made by a man named Joseph French.

( his enthusiasm's kind of adorable. )

[ What an oddly specific fact for Mafuyu to know, but Eli isn't going to question it. ]

Ohhh, so it was named after the guy. Huh. Cool.

[ Turning the menu over, he focuses briefly on the types of milkshake he could get before squinting at the coffee and tea section. ]

I still can't believe anyone can walk in here and get any of this, whenever they want.

Nah, sure ain't. ADDF controls all the food in town since we don't have a surplus. You have to go to the warehouses to get your share. Not sure how folks would feel if anyone tried opening a whole restaurant using any of that.

( addf? a ration system? ... this must be a sort of paradise then; grocery stores, restaurants, cafes... )

It must be difficult.

[The question does come as a bit of a surprise - though with a second of thought, no, no, it shouldn't. The offer is appreciated, and that does show in the gentle smile he gives her! But he also shakes his head.]

Tonight, I will make do, and you will not pass out at this table.

[Not that he'd ever take so much from her that she'd faint from blood loss or anything, but. You know. Extenuating circumstances.]

[Admittedly, midnight(ish) is still pretty early for him, even with "being able to be awake in the daytime" adjustments, but it's not every day one goes through All That, so even he's dressed comfortably, hair still a little damp and pushed back out of his face, makeup reduced to the slightly-smudgy remnants of eyeliner under his eyes.

And for once, the indifference of the locals is a benefit, as just ordering an empty glass only gets a raised eyebrow and an eyeroll about some people at worst. He does at least have the decency to fill it once any staff's backs are turned, though, from a couple packets brought from the dorm fridge. Totally just a protein shake, yep, don't mind him, he's here to be with friends not to eat 24-hour chain diner trash (affectionate). Or something like that. The energy here is fully straddling the line between pretentious jock and wine aunt sneaking a flask to family dinner.

And if no one else intercepts (intentionally or otherwise), he'll absolutely try to be sneaky about just picking up the check. Surprise! It's the least he can do since everyone else around the table will be feeding him on The Vibes.]

[A quick scan of the menu over someone's shoulder and--]

Many of these things can be prepared in similar conditions- [i.e., with a lot of butter on a griddle] -so the kitchen is more than capable of making everything, and the volume is simply how these sorts of restaurants operate. They get the ingredients from a supplier, not unlike the grocery stores.

[And, you know, since we're right with Mafuyu in the "his enthusiasm's kind of adorable" camp--]

You get whatever looks good. [Obviously, but-] They'll surely let you order again if you want more. And yes, France is a country in Europe. It's where I'm from.

[He's present and it absolutely counts for something. Honestly, they should all probably be resting, but there's something about gathering together in a 24 hour chain place that just kind of... cements the bond and helps with decompressing.

Not that that will be commented on at all, given Celeste's own hangups around letting himself make real connections, but it does make McGillis's general lack of conversation lean more on the side of "companionable silence" than "I was dragged here against my will".]

It's what I'm used to, so, I dunno. Not really? It's only difficult when the guys on duty want to give you a hard time.

It's wild to just be able to get whatever I want here.

There's an awkward pause from him, though, as he looks at Celeste. ]

Are you going to be okay around this much food?

[ Eli, looking at the waffle... ]

Is that all you're going to get? Really?

[ McGillis, they have SIDES! You can add things to your order! Combos exist! It's crazy! ]

Originally, yes. And you're Australian, no?

[They can sound a little funny together, it's fine.

He blinks at the question. Does a little head tilt, because... why wouldn't he? Sure, it's disappointing he can't really share with everyone, but, like. That's a disappointment he's long since gotten used to.]

I'll be fine. This isn't my first time telling restaurant workers I don't need to order anything.

[So, yeah, being around food doesn't bother him! Small mercies! Even being around food (all of you that still have open and bandaged wounds...) isn't too bad at the moment, but we do have enough tact to not bring that one up out loud.]

It would be filling, at least. But essentially, there's no reason to get it over the normal pancake menu.

He wonders if it's something just simply unique to this world. As for him, he'll be clad in his sparkling armor after having had the opportunity to get changed. It's business as usual for him when dressing up is concerned. ]
