The baboons do not like being watched. They bare their teeth at Richard much to the disdain of their handlers who are trying to have a conversation. The guardsmen choose to ignore this, though. Weird looking as Richard is, he doesn't appear to be doing anything wrong.

"Masahert from the greater temple told me the other day that neither Pharaoh or the great priests have brought by offerings to the Gods in weeks..."

"Then the lesser priests should do their jobs and act in their stead."

"That's the thing! They haven't received anything to offer either."

[Hmm. Offerings to the Gods? It sounds like this must be a regular and expected thing, then...

He'll take a couple of steps back in the hope of getting the baboons to calm down a bit, though he's remaining alert to see what else he can hear.]

[Fray's here too; he's going to join Richard in listening in on this conversation and not pissing off the baboons, that sounds like a good plan.]

"But we're bringing in so much food from the northern lands... Surely the Pharaoh isn't keeping that all to himself?"

"Well, it's not going to the temples or villagers."
