of knights, dogs, and yakitori

( another week, another palace- and far be it from us to deny tradition. through bickering, wandering and other shenanigans, the group from argenti's palace will find themselves at an agreeable izakaya- not entirely meals, and they definitely have to make an argument for the younger teens, thank you izou, but the atmosphere is light and more importantly, this bad boy can fit so many customers at one group table. it was a hard battle- so now it's time to rest hard, too.

[ At least this way everyone's likely to make it back home after, rather than passed out in the streets!

Probably. Unless Maika gets grumpy. ]

Experience is the best teacher. Anyone who's survived this long isn't a total novice anymore, anyway.

Mm, I suppose that's true, ain't it. Formal trainin's overrated, if ya ask me. I went to all sorta sword schools when I was in Edo, but none of 'em felt like they measured up ta what I could do on my own.

I've never been. But if they don't kill you when you fail, they're not going to hold up to learning how to stab someone faster than they can stab you.

[Damn.... hardcore.]

Don't think they do that, but old school samurai do gotta kill themselves when they really fuck up.

Restoring honor, and all that shit? Or just avoiding the consequences?

[ Is that super universal or are their countries just a little alike? Huh. ]

It's s'posed ta be the first thing I think, but ta me it always felt like it was really the second. Never really made sense ta me. All the way up to when I got executed all I was thinkin' was how I didn't wanna die, and that was after they tortured me fer information.

[Izou is this appropriate dinner table conversation?]

[ Hopefully no one's within earshot of them and trying to eat?? Because sadly Maika will just plunk her chin thoughtfully in her hand, as though this is an entirely normal conversation to have. ]

That's because people who care more about honor than survival don't have any fucking sense. If you live, you'll heal up from torture eventually. Once you're dead... that's it. [ Uh. A brief pause before she concedes the context here: ] ...Usually.

[Izou laughs a little at the concession. Yeah!]

S'funny you say that, since another guy that worked as a manslayer like me, when he got caught, he asked fer his blade so he could die that way instead'a lettin' them execute him. And if there's anyone around here that's got less sense than me, it's him.

[Shinbei makes Izou look smart and level headed.]

...And he actually did it? Once he had his blade back, he could have taken at least four or five of them with him.

[ And the spite would absolutely have been worth it, Maika's tone says. ]

Yeah! That's what I woulda done if I were him!!! Probably why they didn't even give me the chance, I guess.

[Granted he didn't have to prove himself in the same way Shinbei, who hadn't been from a samurai family, felt he had to.]
