( at some point a bedraggled lot in yukatas manage to make their way to the dorm, shower and patch themselves up. and then mafuyu makes a very earnest request that they all go out for dinner, and, well, apparently many struggle to refuse her.

this is how they find themselves in something akin to a denny's or an ihop at like, midnight.

Going back to bed after breakfast is beyond frivolous.

Going to the Nekiya is out, unfortunately, but that means I can rehearse for my current job at the theater.

[ He's been going all in on that acting quest. ]

Not at home - but here, yes. I've found that to be one of the more enjoyable commissions. Come by for a show if you need to see for yourself.

[ He's really enjoying it, honestly. His whole life has felt like keeping up an act, and maybe that early practice is paying off now? ]

[ Would they even let him into a theater?! Eli's so scruffy! ]

Huh. Well, at least someone is enjoying that... Good on ya, I guess. I'll see if I can swing by for one before it's over, but I meant it when I said I don't meet a lot of actors. There isn't time for stuff like theater and shows back home yet.

[ Ah... right, the whole world destruction issue. McGillis is a lot less caught up in the whole metaphorical read of the apocalypse now, and he and Eli are on better terms, so it's a good time to reapproach this. ]

I can roughly imagine. My world went through a massive calamity 300 years ago - far before my time, obviously, but I have read a lot of texts from and about the era.

How recent has it been for you?

Whoa. That's a long time ago.

[ He can't even fathom what reading about the chaos on his version of Earth would be like that far in the future. It'd probably seem mythical, considering all the demons and magic and shit. ]

It was, uh... hm... [ Hang on. He has to do some counting on his fingers real quick. ] About fifteen years ago? Or... sixteen...? I don't know if birthdays even count if you have 'em while here.

[ Excuse??? ]

So I was probably only four when everything went down.

I see... That's no time at all. And... happy belated birthday, as well.

[ Eli is a big boy now!! McGillis isn't the type to get outraged that someone didn't tell him it's their birthday, least of all when he hadn't even been getting along with that someone until today. But nevertheless. ]

That certainly explains why we were talking right past each other when we met, too.

[ Eli isn't necessarily about to broadcast that it was technically his birthday a week or so ago, either. It's just another day without his mom around to celebrate it with. ]

And yeah. Guess so. We got, what? Centuries between us?

Centuries and a whole different reality. Our worlds seem to diverge in a number of ways, despite sharing the nearly-averted annihilation aspect.

[ Though in the grand scheme of multiverse theory, it's actually pretty astounding that all of them seem to at least share some level of common knowledge among each other. Braphine picked well to maximize communicative capabilities. ]

The end of the world I was referring to a few weeks back wasn't quite that literal though - I was thinking more in terms of a status quo that is accepted as a given, rather than in terms of death and destruction.

[ But he was very dramatic about it. Sorry. ]

How can it be the end of the world if it ain't a literal end of the world, though?

[ Eli's lack of vocabulary and understanding is not as frustrating as it could be after he spent a while allied with mostly-illiterate child soldiers and explaining stuff to them as well. It's fine. ]

There are certain things people consider to be 'the way of the world' or 'just how it is', right? Structures so accepted as universal truth that nobody thinks twice about them.

'Bloodlines have inherent value', 'the human body should be kept pure', 'money rules the world'.... these kinds of beliefs.

The apocalypse I wish for would break down such systems. Another word for it would be 'revolution'.

Hmm, I do know what revolution means. I'm not sure I'd compare the two. You don't overthrow anything during an apocalypse. It's just people trying to survive.

Sometimes a revolution isn't too different from that.

[ Gotta smash the system that is destroying you, etc etc. ]
