He doesn't actually know how the others would react. He's assuming he has already lost... But until that moment actually happens... there's always a chance.
But this isn't so different than what I went through... It's easy to lie. That lie may very well be what trapped him. And the truth hurts, but if people are approached with honesty then there's a better chance to work together.
