[Certainly not a bad sort of surprise, though. He hadn't intended to continue being a guardian for Mafuyu, but... the cards had all fallen into place, and now here they are. In contrast, he had intended to check in on Arven when they first met, but his self-sufficiency (and the shaky first meeting) had caused that relationship to be a bit slower to form.
As his de facto son in law, though? Arven won't need to decide he needs him on his own, he'll simply be there.]
